D&D Campaign: by the Miniature…and Against the Giants!

Apologies for my recent absence, but hey, Harry and James gave me permission! ;)

Tomorrow I start my first 4e game, so I’ve been going through my miniatures and collecting the ones I’ll need for the first few sessions (you guessed it, mostly kobolds). The first thing I ran across was a big ziploc filled with all the miniatures I used in the last campaign I ran. I thought it might be interesting to share a picture of them…the tale of a campaign as told by the miniatures that inhabited it.

Also, we tore into our case of Against the Giants yesterday, and I have to say that Mrs. Droid is an amazing puller…her first two boosters contained dragons! We got the elder white and the young adamantine, and our other huges were all very good except for the carrion crawler (although he’s better in person than he looks on the Web).

That’s one thing I wanted to report about this set. I’ve seen a lot of hate directed at the set online, criticisms ranging from poor paint jobs to bad sculpting and distribution. While I would rather the dragonborn and tieflings been uncommon instead of rare, I thought the actual distribution in our boosters was the best I had ever seen it for a D&D minis set. I’m usually not too critical of paint jobs either, but these were fine, and the sculpts are much more impressive in person than they looked in the previews.

I do think we got almost a perfect pull, but regardless these minis are better than the ones I got from the last two sets I bought in quantity (Angelfire and Archfiends). I like the choices they made, and the usability of almost every figure I opened. The PC-quality figures are all of good quality and usable by a variety of characters.

All in all I think Against the Giants is a winner!

I’m glad you made a positive point about the Against the Giants set. New to the DnD miniatures (these, at least - I remember playing with the original Ral Partha and TSR metals back in the day), I found the ATG packs to have a great distribution of minis. The Dungeons of Despair (the core pack, I assume?) gave me tons of duplicates. There are crappily-painted minis throughout the series, but when you leave such things up to slave-laborers in China, what should we expect? I, too, nabbed the Elder White in my pack, as well as the Carrion and two of the Death Titans (one of which has run off), the Tempest, the Storm Giant and a couple of others. Not a bad series. Better than the smaller boosters, for sure.

Yeah, I really enjoyed these, and plan on picking up quite a few singles from this set at Gencon.
