The Gamer Dome - Making a Game Out of Game Design

Forgotten Realms index incoming!

Well, it may take a couple of weeks after I receive the book, but an anonymous Forgotten Realms fan out there purchased the book off my Wish List so that all FR fans could benefit from a decent index!

In the interest of fan unity, I’m calling for all Living Forgotten Realms players to treat their table-mates at each event as if they were the ones who sent me this book. Instant bond, plus when they ask you why you’re looking at them so lovingly, you can use it as an excuse to plug the blog! :) .

I’ve created more adventures for and run more games in the Forgotten Realms than any other setting over the course of my gaming life. I’ve run Waterdeep intrigue campaigns, heartland expeditions, magical tales in Silverymoon and the North, Thayan slave revolts, and, perhaps my favorite, a coming of age campaign beginning in the deserts of Calimshan and expanding into Tethyr and the war against the Sythillisian Empire.

I haven’t always been on board with some of the RSE’s (Realms-Shattering Events, to the non-initiated ;) ) that have come down between editions, but the recent ones look to me like they’re going over the top. Not to mention I’m not thrilled about adding Dragonborn and Tieflings to the Realms. I understand why they’re doing it that way, I just think it’s the kind of “generic” mindset that’s slowly leached a lot of the cool flavor out of D&D over the past two and a half editions.

I’d like to thank whoever sent the book, though, as it’ll give me a chance to read it for myself, and also to provide a good index…Forgotten Realms fans deserve it!

UPDATE: And, wow, the book has arrived! Either our mysterious benefactor shipped it overnight, or he or she just got lucky with standard shipping! Either way…once more into the breach!

This is excellent news, and I can’t wait to see it done!

    Thanks for doing this.

Not a problem Ishmayl. There’s no better way to really get familiar with a book than to index it…I certainly know the PHB better than I would have! :)

You will be my hero. That index in there currently is just sad. Gracias!

I can kind of understand being upset by the dragonborn and the Spellplague and all that… but tieflings have always been in FR, more so than any other setting aside from the new Points of Light and Planescape. I mean, they’re right in the 3rd edition setting core book!

Actually, having read the FRCG myself I have to say they changed less stuff than I was expecting.

    Good point, Nivenus!

I don’t remember tieflings being featured in the gray box, but I’m a long way out from reading it, so I may be wrong. Still, you’re right that they were there in 3e, but I tried my best to ignore them. :) I’ve never been a big fan of tieflings and aasimar, planar stuff of any stripe really, and so I can rightly complain about them in 4e as well I think. ;)

Everyone knows when there are changes there will always be people to like or dislike a particular change. I saw no reason to add dragonborn etc., but am willing to overlook it. In fact, while it was not advice taken from here I considered my choice of race, for my first LFR character, to be Dragonborn from a similar perspective to your indexing. If I play the race I will learn a lot more about it and see why someone may think it is a nice addition. I hope I do, but the first time I see someone pretending to be born of some great wyrm I will have to throw him to his painful and unhonorable death.

[...] I’d index it, because I had no intention of purchasing it myself. Well, some virtuous reader sent me a copy of the book by purchasing it off my Amazon wishlist, and so it was time to live up to my part of the [...]
