All I can say is…w00t!
I’ve always been a big fan of Gary Gygax’s writing and approach to roleplaying games. I think it’s been fashionable to deride his unique style and to say that his approach to games is old fashioned (well, he only created the genre, after all), but I’ve never been among those people. I’ve been reading 1e, 3e, and 4e core books over the past few months, and frankly I’m not convinced that roleplaying games have really progressed all that much as games. Changed, sure, but for the better? It’s arguable.
Heck, I’ll be running three 1e AD&D games at Gencon, playing in a single 4e game, and not touching 3.x with a 10-foot pole. I’ll be sure to report back how things went.
Speaking of that, has anyone ever played Lejendary Journeys? I haven’t, but I might just pick up the books and give them a read-through sometime this Fall.
Speaking of Gencon and the Gygax name, have you all heard about the Tower of Gygax? Here’s the description from Keith Baker’s blog, although event specifics (like, where is it at, and how do you sign up) don’t seem to have been posted yet. You can, however, still contribute to the Tower of Gygax if you’re interested in doing so!
A lot of people have volunteered to help with the Tower, either by writing rooms, DMing one or more shifts at GenCon, or both. There’s been a great response both from professional designers and people who simply love the game, and I hope to get more. If you’d like to help out, send me an email at onesmallkeith@gmail.com, and let me know. We can always use more rooms, and I’d certainly love to find a few more people willing to take on a two-hour shift sometime between 12-10 AM.
Looking to rooms, the idea is that each room is, in a way, its own self-contained adventure. It has to connect to the rest of the Tower, and I have clear guidelines explaining the elements a room needs to have; if you’re interested, I’ll send them to you. Rooms need to be designed for AD&D, but I encourage people not to be scared off by this; even if you haven’t touched AD&D for ten years (or ever), it’s just not that hard to pick up again. If you don’t have the books, take a look at http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/
. We’ve got enough contributors to run the event, but I’d always like to have more; the Tower is like a memorial quilt, and I’d like to get squares from as many different people as possible. The challenge is the deadline: I’d like to have rooms by August 1st. While things can be as elaborate as you’d like, at the bottom level we’re talking about a single room designed to occupy people for 15 minutes or half an hour, so it’s not as crazy as it sounds. So if you’re interested in writing a room, or DMing a session at the con, send me an email!
There are a few other Gary Gygax memorial events planned for Gencon. I know that I’ll be throwing some dice into the pot, at the very least!

“Speaking of that, has anyone ever played Lejendary Journeys?”
Yes, at the risk of bragging (oh what the heck, it is bragging) I played with Gygax himself, and have a signed and dedicated copy. I think it’s a very good middle-ground between combat D&D and skill-focused GURPS. I can’t see any of my groups being wild about it, but it certainly has a niche.

Well, I guess I won’t be asking to borrow your copy!

Gary would be… disappointed.
