Thrift Treasure: Talisman 2e

Widely considered to be the most playable edition of Talisman, 2nd edition is the one that brings back fond memories for me (which 4e failed to capture). Yesterday I was hunting thrift stores for gadgets, and at the back of the top shelf of games (I always check the game shelf…who doesn’t?) I saw a Talisman box.

I hadn’t seen one in so long, I thought it was an expansion box I’d never seen, because it seemed so small compared to the 4th Edition box as well as the box I kept my old 2nd Edition + expansions in. I pulled it out, carefully peeled the tape away from the edges, and looked inside. What I found brought a smile to my face.

Talisman 2e

Every piece intact, and not only intact but in pristine condition. I could find no evidence that the cards had ever been used except to sort them and put them into individual plastic bags. There are a few dings on the box, but not many, and it still shines like the day it hit Fantastic Worlds, my childhood FLGS.

Total Cost: $0.56

Holy crap, that’s a huge find! Even if you hadn’t been interested in it, it’d be a huge score if you put it on Ebay or a Boardgamegeek auction. Nice find.

My copy, and all of the expansions, was wiped out in a basement flood years ago. It’s not my type of game anymore, but I wish I still had it nonetheless.

Yeah, my old copy with all the expansions was overrun by mold in storage, so I sadly had to throw it out earlier this year.

It’s actually no longer my type of game, either, so I’m probably going to give it away as a contest prize, Ebay it, or trade it at the Geek. I’ve got 4th Edition sitting in the closet anyway. :)

I forgot to mention in the article the treasure I let slip away: a fishtank model of a Roman or Greek temple that was perfectly sized to use with D&D miniatures, and would have gone perfect with the terrain project I’m starting this summer. It was $12, but I didn’t grab it when I saw it, and when I went back it was gone.
